Preperation:
How To Prepare
For Your New Tattoo
What to do before
your appointment
-
Don’t show up tired! Being well-rested helps you stay relaxed and handle the process better. If you didn’t sleep well, just let your artist know so they can help make things easier for you.
-
Drink plenty of water the day before your session. Hydrated skin takes ink better, and you’ll feel better too! Bring a water bottle to sip on during your appointment, and keep up the hydration afterward to help your tattoo heal.
-
If the tattoo area is hairy, give it a shave a couple of times before your appointment. Be gentle to avoid cuts or irritation. Not comfortable shaving? No problem—just let your artist know, and they’ll handle it for you.
-
This one’s simple but important—show up fresh and clean. Avoid coming in after a workout or any sweaty activity. Trust us, your artist will appreciate it!
-
Keep your skin hydrated in the week leading up to your session. Moisturizing daily helps your skin be at its best for the tattoo. Just skip the lotion on the actual day of your appointment—it can interfere with the process.
-
Have a good meal before your session to keep your energy up. Bring snacks—especially for longer sessions—to stay fueled and avoid feeling light-headed. Think granola bars, fruit, or whatever you enjoy that’s easy to eat.
-
Wear comfy, loose clothes that give easy access to the tattoo area. Tight or complicated outfits can make things awkward for both you and your artist.
What NOT to do
before your appointment
-
Avoid alcohol, drugs, or anything that could thin your blood—they make the process harder and more dangerous. If you’re nervous, talk to your artist; they’ll help you through it.
-
Cuts, burns, fresh tans, or peeling skin can make healing harder and might mean rescheduling your appointment.
-
Heavy exercise right before your session can make your muscles sore and the tattoo more painful. Take it easy!
-
Your artist keeps everything clean and sterile for a reason. Avoid touching their tools or your fresh tattoo to keep things safe and sanitary.
-
If something comes up, let your artist know ASAP. Last-minute cancellations leave them with unfillable time. Life happens, but a heads-up goes a long way!
What to do during
your appointment
-
Tattoo sessions can take a while, so bring headphones, a book, or a tablet to keep yourself entertained. Just avoid anything that makes you move around.
-
Check your studio’s policy, but a friend or family member is often welcome. Keep it to one person and make sure they won’t distract you or your artist.
-
Not sure about something? Ask! A good artist will happily explain things and make sure you’re comfortable.
